Engineering Methods for the Design and Selection of Materials Against Fracture

The object of this program was to make a comprehensive study of the physical and mechanical properties of selected metal alloys in an effort to reduce this information so that ultimately a correlation could be established between various material properties and fracture toughness. It was determined that a computerized regression analysis using chemistry and heat treatment as independent variables and plane strain fracture toughness (K sub Ic) as the dependent variable yielded equations which predicted fracture toughness with excellent reliability for 4340 steel tested in accordance with accepted criteria for measuring K sub Ic. Sufficient data to utilize this technique were available only for 4340 steel. It is recommended that this technique be applied to other alloys when sufficient data become available. (Author).
