This report presents the work of one of a series of three studies within the FAST programme of applied technology assessments on health technologies. In this study, the technology assessment has focused on technological innovations which can contribute to meeting the needs of the elderly within the community care context. Applications of technology which can support the prolongation of the independence of elderly people in community settings are of primary interest. This report identifies the needs associated with aging in the community and explores the role of technology in meeting these needs. Four areas of need - social, medical, activities of daily living (ADL), and security - and related technological applications which bear critically on the maintenance of independence in the community care context are focused on.
