Wireless sensors have become fairly ubiquitous, having a wide variety of applications. Commonly, sensors are deployed as solitary devices, and usually in a fixed position. The ability to network several wireless sensors together as one large network, especially with moving nodes, provides solutions to data gathering that might otherwise be impossible. These additions add complexity, however, and development times and costs can be significantly higher than with stand-alone static nodes. The ability to simulate combinations of hardware, software, and networking algorithms is useful for system planning and development. Tools exist to simulate some aspects of these dynamic wireless sensor networks, but for certain types of data collection, no single simulation exists to model all needed components. Data collection with high altitude balloons is one such example. This simulation attempts to provide a framework for analysis and testing of combinations of components of a simulated dynamic wireless sensor network for this purpose.

Pervasive Computing and Networking aim at providing ubiquitous, ever-present, adaptable, smart, enveloping and immersive environments in which computing components and humans can interact regardless of the location. The combination of an abundance of computational power of the processors and the communication bandwidth provided by the wireless and mobile networking everywhere and all the time makes such environments within the reach of current technology. These challenges and the perspective on the seminal directions of the research in this area were the subject of the Workshop for Pervasive Computing and Networking at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY, USA. This book presents chapters based on presentations made at the workshop by leaders in the field. The scope of Advances in Pervasive Computing and Networking ranges from fundamental theory of pervasive computing and networking to crucial challenges and emerging applications. Such seminal topics as a scalable, self-organizing technology for sensor networks, the fundamental relationship between the achievable capacity and delay in mobile wireless networks, the role of self-optimization in sensor networks or similarities and differences between computer networks and their biological counterparts are the subject of the first group of chapters. The next group of chapters covers communication issues, such as cooperative communication in mobile, wireless and sensor networks, methods for maximizing aggregate throughput in 802.11 mesh networks with a physical carrier, and self-configuring location discovery systems for smart environments. The recent development of communication and sensor technology results in the growth of a new attractive and challenging area - wireless sensor networks (WSNs). A wireless sensor network which consists of a large number of sensor nodes is deployed in environmental fields to serve various applications. Facilitated with the ability of wireless communication and intelligent computation, these nodes become smart sensors which do not only perceive ambient physical parameters but also be able to process information, cooperate with each other and self-organize into the network. These new features assist the sensor nodes as well as the network to operate more efficiently in terms of both data acquisition and energy consumption. Special purposes of the applications require design and operation of WSNs different from conventional networks such as the internet. The network design must take into account of the objectives of specific applications. The nature of deployed environment must be considered. The limited of sensor nodes resources such as memory, computational ability, communication bandwidth and energy source are the challenges in network design. A smart wireless sensor network must be able to deal with these constraints as well as to guarantee the connectivity, coverage, reliability and security of network's operation for a maximized lifetime. This book discusses various aspects of designing such smart wireless sensor networks.
