Trends such as globalization, an increasing number of women on the labour market and changing age structures have stimulated a renewed interest in the effects of diversity in groups and organizations. Diversity not only refers to demographic differences, but also to role-related or membership differences, abilities, opinions, and personality differences. This special issue focuses on processes and outcomes of homogeneous and heterogeneous groups and presents insights aimed at counteracting possible negative consequences while simultaneously enhancing positive outcomes. Questions addressed are, for example, how diversity affects the cooperation and decision making of groups, whether heterogeneous groups are more or less effective than homogeneous groups, and how one can improve the functioning of heterogeneous groups in case of negative (side-) effects. The issue thus wants to contribute both to a further understanding of diversity effects in groups, and to the development of interventions aimed at increasing the effectiveness of diverse groups.
