Seit der Veröffentlichung von Die Ausgewanderten hat W. G. Sebald wie kaum ein zweiter deutscher Autor vor allem im englischsprachigen Raum Aufsehen erregt. Die positive Rezeption liegt zum einen an seinem ausgeprägten Interesse an den Schmerzensspuren der Geschichte, welche Kolonialismus und Holocaust hinterlassen haben. Andererseits gründet sein internationaler Ruhm in der Favorisierung des biografischen und autobiografischen Denkens als einem Medium von Geschichtserfahrung. Hinzu kommt sein vielfältiges Spiel mit Gattungsgrenzen, Intertextualität, der Fotografie und den bildenden Künsten. Gerade die intertextuelle und intermediale Vernetzung seiner Prosa produziert eine spezifische Tonart, die als Ausdruck seines Geschichtsbildes zu verstehen ist. Diversity is one of the defining characteristics of contemporary German-language literature, not just in terms of the variety of authors writing in German today, but also in relation to theme, form, technique and style.
