Abstract: Uncertainty over future sources of energy provides strong motivation to explore technologies that free systems from traditional energy inputs. This project investigated home built solar water heating systems that can be used in northern climates. A computational model was developed to assist homeowners in the design of their own system. A prototype was designed using the model and then constructed. The prototype was used to validate the predictions given by the model. An economic analysis of installing a solar hot water heating system was then carried out.
