In other words, while IT has been considered a critical mechanism of multi-organizational business relationships, the research stream has treated the governance of IT infrastructure to be within one single firm's hierarchy. Such an approach fails to recognize the recent trend towards managing a firm's IT infrastructure through a variety of governance mechanisms with other firms.
