Souvent c’est la note qui contient l’essentiel. C’est alors par elle qu’il faut commencer. Nous distinguons entre le texte et le paratexte mais le paratexte est aussi une autre sorte de texte. Une « frange d’incertitude » (Genette) nous permet de passer d’un régime à l’autre. Les choses deviennent intéressantes à ce moment. Imaginez la note à la place du texte, le texte à la place de la note. Votre univers bascule, vous entrez dans un monde parallèle. La littérature est le lieu où la frontière entre le texte et les notes devient indécidable. Le présent volume passe en revue les pratiques d’annotation en contexte européen et ailleurs. L’École des chartes diffuse depuis plusieurs années auprès de ses élèves et des membres du groupe de recherche «Civilisation de l’écrit au Moyen Âge» des documents de travail internes destinés à préciser les principes qui doivent présider à l’édition des textes médiévaux. Ces conseils sont le fruit du travail d’une équipe et s’inscrivent dans une tradition où l’École des chartes s’est déjà illustrée en matière d’édition de textes littéraires et de documents du Moyen Âge. Au moment où les chercheurs français affirment avec force la nécessité d’un retour vers l’érudition, en même temps que de son intégration délibérée à un questionnement proprement historien, l’heure semble venue de diffuser plus largement ce travail.
