The Confederation Poets were a group of Canadian English-language poets of the late nineteenth century whose work expressed the national consciousness inspired by the Confederation of 1867. Their transcendental and romantic praise of the Canadian landscape would go on to dominate Canadian poetry until the twentieth century. They were also called the Maple Tree School due to how their verses portrayed a touching love for the Canadian landscape. The term ‘Confederation Poets’ was coined by the Canadian professor and literary critic Malcolm Ross, who singled out four poets: Charles G. D. Roberts (1860–1943); Bliss Carman (1861–1929); Archibald Lampman (1861–1899); and Duncan Campbell Scott (1862–1947). They composed poems in a classic form, often on themes of love or philosophical speculation against the backdrop of nature; and they all reacted to Canada’s growing industrialisation, favouring a retreat to the as yet unspoiled wilderness. This comprehensive volume of the Delphi Poets Series presents the complete poetical works of the four principal members of the Confederation Poets, with numerous illustrations and the usual Delphi bonus material. Delphi Complete Poetical Works of Thomas Otway (Illustrated)

Restoration era playwright and poet, Thomas Otway remains a prominent figure in the development of sentimental drama. His verses and plays are celebrated for their convincing depiction of human emotions, produced in an age of heroic, yet artificial tragedies. ‘Venice Preserved’, his undoubted masterpiece, was an enduring theatrical success and enjoyed countless revivals in the ensuing decades, establishing the tragedy as one of the most important works of seventeenth century drama. Otway’s long poem ‘The Poets Complaint of his Muse’ was an open attack against his literary enemies and critics, revealing his sabre-sharp wit and ingenious gift of witty invention. The favourite poet of Queen Victoria, Adelaide Anne Procter was also an important philanthropist and early feminist writer. Her literary career was launched by Charles Dickens in his periodicals, as she submitted verses tackling themes of religion, homelessness, poverty and fallen women, drawing widespread attention to the misery of the conditions under which the poor lived. Her promising literary career was tragically cut short at the age of 38 by her death to tuberculosis, partly fuelled by her extensive charity work. After Alfred, Lord Tennyson, she was deemed by many the most popular poet of her day. The Delphi Poets Series offers readers the works of literature’s finest poets, with superior formatting.
