Gardens and Academies in Early Modern Italy and Beyond

This collection of essays explores the role of gardens in early modern academies and, conversely, the place of what might be called 'academic culture' in early modern gardens. While studies of botanical gardens have often focused on their association with a research institution, the intention of this book is deliberately broader, seeking to explore the interconnections between the built environment of the early modern garden and the more or less organised social and intellectual life it supported. As such, the book contributes to the intersection of several fields of research: garden history, literary history, architectural history and socio-political history, and considers the garden as a site of performance that requires an intermedial approach.

Il rilievo montuoso dei Colli Albani, a sud est di Roma, è stato capillarmente indagato sia nel passato sia durante la supervisione scientifica svolta dalle Soprintendenze territoriali in occasione delle moderne attività edilizie. Unendo i dati già noti con i risultati delle recenti campagne archeologiche, è stata sviluppata una ricerca focalizzata sullo specifico aspetto delle vie di comunicazione e sulle dinamiche insediative lungo le pendici occidentali del cratere Albano. La geomorfologia è stata utilizzata come chiave di lettura per comprendere meglio quali fossero le caratteristiche fisiche che più hanno condizionato le varie forme di sfruttamento del territorio. A tal fine, sovrapponendo le evidenze archeologiche così individuate alla carta geomorfologica, le aree intorno alle linee di crinale del cratere sono risultate essere le più ricettive allo sfruttamento e quindi alla modificazione da parte delle comunità. In particolare, i punti di intersezione tra crinali radiali e concentrici al cratere si sono rivelati di maggiore impatto, come descritto nei casi studio individuati in località Marcandreola (Ciampino, Roma). In questi sono emerse successive fasi di sfruttamento della rotta più importante dell'area, su cui si sviluppa la cosiddetta via Castrimeniense, testimonianze di attività vulcanica in età storica e un'intensa attività di culto. L'analisi dei dati ha portato a ridisegnare il graduale sfruttamento di questo territorio prima della sua conquista da parte di Roma. The Colli Albani is a region close to Rome that has been extensively investigated both in the past and during the scientific supervision of the Superintendency, often preceding modern building activities. Combining data from recent excavation campaigns and legacy data, this research focuses on the specific topics of the communication routes and settlement dynamics on the western slopes of the Alban crater. Geomorphology has been used as a key to better understand the morphological features that most influenced the use of the territory by the human communities. To this end, known archaeological remains were superimposed onto the geomorphological map revealing how human activity is most intense near and on the volcanic ridges. Moreover, the intersections between radial and concentric ridges appear of major importance, as is clear from two cases study sites in the Marcandreola area (Ciampino, Rome). Here, several use-phases of the most important route in the area, as the so-called via Castrimeniense, traces of volcanic activity in historical times, and intensive cult activity, were identified. From this it has been possible to redraw the gradual exploitation of this territory before it was conquered by Rome.
