"The Child of Pleasure" is a prose novel by the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio and is very poetic. Written simultaneously with Wild's Dorian Gray, the story is very close in spirit to it. It tells of a young and beautiful dandy and seducer Andrea Sperelli. His numerous love affairs develop alongside his romance with the diabolic femme fatale Elena Muti. Like Dorian Gray, Andrea falls because of his sins. He finds the way out of the disaster thanks to his new affection for a pure and spiritual girl. But did he manage to forget Elena?

Drawing on novel archival evidence that sheds light on Anglo-Italian diplomatic relations and the French-Italian contest for power in the Adriatic, this book recounts the story of decadent poet Gabriele D’Annunzio’s occupation of Fiume. Determining the fate of this Italian enclave in coastal Croatia had proved impossible at the Paris Peace Conference. In September 1919, D’Annunzio and his ‘legionnaires’ installed themselves in Fiume in a bid to embarrass Italy into declaring its annexation. In the months that followed, the poet did his best to fashion Fiume into his ideal political community, culminating in the proclamation of a Constitution known as the Carnaro Charter. The Charter was as visionary as it was short-lived: having reached an agreement with Yugoslavia on the status of Fiume, Italy put an end to the poet’s socio-political experiment in December 1920. In addition to offering the most comprehensive and detailed analysis to date of the CarnaroCharter, the book shows what has eluded all historians of D’Annunzio’s Fiume: that the sublimation and discursive circulation of same-sex desire was integral to shaping and sustaining the political and legal order of the occupation, and that D’Annunzio’s love-lore in Fiume was continuous with broader homoerotic preoccupations in his oeuvre.

Gabriele D’Annunzio pubblica Il Piacere nel 1889, proponendosi di uscire dai limiti del Naturalismo, non più imitando, ma continuando la natura. Inizia così un tipo di prosa introspettiva e psicologica, tentando di scandagliare le complicazioni e le deviazioni della vita mondana e amorosa del protagonista, Andrea Sperelli, «ultimo discendente d'una razza intellettuale», educato dal padre a costruire la propria esistenza come «un'opera d'arte». Il culto dell'arte, la risoluzione della vita stessa nell'arte, la ricerca del bello e di tutto ciò che è prezioso nel più assoluto distacco da ogni convenzione morale, il disprezzo per la volgarità del mondo borghese, accomunano il romanzo di D'Annunzio al Dorian Gray di Oscar Wilde e al Des Esseintes di Huymans, e ne fanno la versione Italiana dell'esteta decadente. Non solo, ma l'«anima camaleontica, mutabile, fluida, virtuale» di Andrea Sperelli rivela quella mancanza di autenticità, di forza morale e di volontà che si ritroverà in tanti personaggi decadenti, crepuscolari, inetti e indifferenti che affollano la letteratura di questo secolo. Duplice e ambigua appare dunque questa figura in cui convivono il grandioso il meschino; e in modo altrettanto duplice, D'Annunzio si immedesima e si distacca da essa.
