"L'orphelin" est au coeur de l'action de nombreux acteurs, de "rituels" internationaux et de programmes humanitaires, en particulier pour venir en aide à ceux désignés comme "orphelins et enfants vulnérables pour cause de sida." Cette construction d'un "orphelin global" se heurte aux réalités locales. Le décalage, entre le peu d'enfants séropositifs ou "affectés" par la maladie de leurs parents et les estimations épidémiologiques, l'illustre. La thèse ici défendue est que ce décalage entre les politiques globales et le niveau local est coproduit, quotidiennement, par des acteurs divers qui interagissent en mobilisant des constructions dynamiques et malléables de "l'orphelin." Afin d'en rendre compte, elle puise ses outils dans deux champs: l'anthropologie de l'enfance et l'anthropologie du développement. Elle s'appuie sur un travail de terrain de deux ans au Niger. En partant de l'étude de cas de confrontations autour du statut "d'orphelin," durant la période coloniale, pour aller jusqu'aux jeux contemporains autour de la catégorie "d'Orphelin et Enfant Vulnérable," sont décrits les réalités quotidiennes des enfants.
