Competency-based Lists of Mathematic Objectives for Elementary E.M.R. Students

From the Introduction: This project was created in order to meet the changing curriculum trends in special education. A thorough survey of current literature and curriculum guides showed there to be several mathematic programs that utilize behavioral objectives to guide E.M.R. children in the development of math skills (Washngton State Superintendent of Public Instruction, 1973, 1971; Jones, 1970). However, not one of these lists of educational objectives separates the different skills within mathematics into individual programs. By combining several math skills into a common list, a student's progress could possibly be hindered. Confusion on an objective might jeopardize the student's potential to advance in other math areas. With lists such as these, competency on lower numbered objectives is not necessarily relevant to later objectives. ... This project offers such individual lists for the various math skills to be covered. The objectives were developed after consulting the texts and /or materials of various math publishers (Scott, Foresman, 1975; Addison, Wesley, 1968; Hoffmeister, 1974). Once written and sequenced according to difficulty, copies of the objectives were given to three different teachers of elementary E.M.R. children. The teachers proofread the lists for clarity and used them in their classrooms for several weeks to determine if the lists were workable. At the end of this period it was decided that the lists are usable but their total value can only be determined after years of use.
