The troubled reign of a fourteenth-century sultan of Delhi helps dramatize the crisis of secular nationhood in post-Independence India. A twelfth century folktale about ‘transposed heads’ offers a path-breaking model for a quintessentially ‘Indian’ theatre in postcolonial times.
