The report summarizes the results of a study to determine the use of charge coupled devices (CCD's) in signal processing systems. This volume deals with digital CCD signal processing. Specific means of implementing digital functions with CCD's are described, and the range of applications is examined. It is concluded that digital CCD signal processing functions are feasible with today's technology, and that such functions are more easily programable and more widely applicable than analog functions. Specific examples are given in some detail, including a 16-bit arithmetic fast Fourier transform 'butterfly' on a ship. Recommendations for future work are included. (Author).

In 1973 the Navy began a program to investigate and demonstrate the impact of the use of charge coupled devices (CCDs) in the digital domain. The concept of digital signal processing with CCDs is discussed briefly. Two implementations of an adder circuit are described and the development of each implementation in arrays to perform arithmetic operations is shown. The experimental results derived from these individual adders and the overall arrays is presented along with some theoretical models. Also presented are the results of a study to determine an efficient means of interconnecting a number of independent processors; the digital CCD development program is expected to produce such independent data processors contained on one or two chips. The study describes a method of interfacing an arbitrary number of such processors that employs distributed network control and exhibits soft failure.

This document is the second volume prepared under the Contract to apply charge coupled devices (CCD) to signal processing systems. Volume I was concerned with digital signal processing; this volume addresses the problems of analog signal processing. The application of CCD's to analog signal processing was investigated. The ideal analog application of CCD's is the correlation function. Both recursive and nonrecursive analog sampled data filters are discussed. CCD matched filter designs are analyzed and design criteria derived. System applications are detailed. These include range gated filters, doppler comb filters, and IFF beacons for radar systems; analog recursive filters and correlators for communication systems; and memories for processing systems.
