Biodiversity in India: Status, Issues and Challenges

This contributed book is based on the current status of biodiversity in India, issues and challenges faced by the authorities involved in conservation efforts, and the imperative role of various direct and indirect stakeholders in biodiversity conservation. The book discusses the current status of different forms of biodiversity in India, challenges faced by stakeholders, issues and reasons for biodiversity losses, and efforts by government through various laws, policies, and programs in a concise and comprehensive manner throughout its many chapters. In this way, readers can access diverse information on Indian biodiversity through this book. It is compiled by leading experts in the field of conservation. In 18 chapters, it covers biodiversity of both fauna and flora, on land and in aquatic ecosystems, legal and policy aspects, as well as innovative conservation tool and techniques. It is useful for undergraduates and graduate students and also educates policy planners, bureaucrats, foresters, and researchers in India and abroad.
Biodiversity Hotspots of India

India's rich natural heritage is under threat, and Biodiversity Hotspots of India explores the urgent need for ecological conservation within its most sensitive regions. The book examines the unique ecosystems and species found in areas like the Himalayas and the Western Ghats, highlighting the impact of habitat destruction and climate change. Did you know that India, despite its relatively small landmass, is a megadiverse country, harboring a significant percentage of the world's biodiversity? The book investigates not only the threats to these hotspots, but also the effectiveness of current conservation strategies. The approach is to progressively build understanding, beginning with a global perspective before narrowing to India's specific hotspots. The book details the challenges faced, such as deforestation and poaching, while evaluating conservation successes and failures. It also argues for a more integrated approach to conservation, emphasizing community involvement and policy reform. By combining scientific rigor with practical insights, this book offers a valuable resource for anyone interested in the conservation and protection of India's natural heritage.
Recovering Biodiversity in Indian Forests

This book demonstrates how varying levels of human disturbance manifested through different management regimes influence composition, richness, diversity and abundance of key mammal, bird and plant species, even within ecologically similar habitats. Based on our results, we show the critical importance of the ‘wildlife preservation’ approach for effective biodiversity conservation. The study also provides examples of a practical application of rigorous methods of quantitative sampling of different plant and animal taxa as well as human influences, thus serving as a useful manual for protected area managers. Protected areas of various kinds have been established in India with the goal of arresting decline in, and to provide for, recovery of biodiversity and ecosystem services. A model that targets ‘wildlife preservation’ under state ownership is practiced across the country. However, forests in India are under intensive human pressure and varying levels of protection; therefore, protected areas may also experience open-access resource use, a model that is being aggressively advocated as a viable alternative to ‘preservationism’. We have evaluated the conservation efficacy of alternative forest management models by quantifying levels of biodiversity under varied levels of access, resource extraction and degree of state-sponsored protection in the Nagarahole forest landscape of southwestern India.
