The world is facing more challenges and much uncertainty. Millions of women, children and adolescents continue to die from preventable causes and many more are threatened from rising authoritarianism, backlash against rights, cuts in development aid, conflict and climate change. Technology offers new solutions but also spreads misinformation that weakens trust in science and proven health strategies. PMNCH is more committed than ever. From high-level champions to grassroots community members, from youth leaders to local governments, partners are working together to create a more just world. By working across countries and sectors, PMNCH helps ensure that health programs are inclusive, effective and long-lasting. This annual report shares some of PMNCH’s successes from 2024 and marks the 20th anniversary of its founding in 2005. Since then, PMNCH has grown into a global network of more than 1 500 members from 131 countries. It’s now the largest alliance and only multi constituency platform focused on coordinated advocacy across sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health (SRMNCAH).
The Beginning of Politics
The conventional wisdom according to which children’s lives should be safe from adult concerns tends to situate them categorically outside the political. Thus understood, children become political agents when they reach maturity and eligibility to formal participation. Alternatively, political skills and competences may be seen to develop gradually through political socialization. Both views are challenged in recent scholarship on youthful politics beyond the formal, adult-centered political world. This book considers politics as it appears and unfolds in children and young people’s everyday lives. The collection problematizes several key concepts in the research field and introduces a relational reading of youthful political agency based on social, spatial and political theorization. The chapters engage with youthful realities in Sri Lanka, Palestine, Sweden, New Zealand, the US and the UK, revealing a variety of ways in which children and youth are important political actors in their own right. The book also includes an extensive literary review on the study of children and young people’s politics in the past decade. This book was originally published as a special issue of Space and Polity.

How do ambitious young men grapple with an unemployment rate in urban Ethiopia hovering around fifty percent? Urban, educated, and unemployed young men have been the primary force behind the recent unrest and revolutions in North Africa and the Middle East. Daniel Mains' detailed and moving ethnographic study, Hope is Cut, examines young men's struggles to retain hope for the future in the midst of economic uncertainty and cultural globalization. Through a close ethnographic examination of young men's day-to-day lives Hope is Cut explores the construction of optimism through activities like formal schooling, the consumption of international films, and the use of khat, a mild stimulant. Mains also provides a consideration of social theories concerning space, time, and capitalism. Young men here experience unemployment as a problem of time—they often congregate on street corners, joking that the only change in their lives is the sun rising and setting. Mains addresses these factors and the importance of reciprocity and international migration as a means of overcoming the barriers to attaining aspirations.
