In this dramatic journey through religious and artistic history, R. A. Scotti traces the defining event of a glorious epoch: the building of St. Peter's Basilica. Begun by the ferociously ambitious Pope Julius II in 1506, the endeavor would span two tumultuous centuries, challenge the greatest Renaissance masters—Michelangelo, Raphael, and Bramante—and enrage Martin Luther. By the time it was completed, Shakespeare had written all of his plays, the Mayflower had reached Plymouth—and Rome had risen with its astounding basilica to become Europe's holy metropolis. A dazzling portrait of human achievement and excess, Basilica is a triumph of historical writing.

In 1506, the ambitious Renaissance pope Julius II laid the foundation of a new St. Peter¿s Basilica that would be the defining event of the epoch. To build his grand church, the pope razed the most sacred shrine in Europe -- the original St. Peter¿s, erected by the emperor Constantine more than a millennium before. Here, Scotti takes us through the construction of the new basilica, an endeavor that spanned two centuries and was marred by intrigues, assassination attempts, decadence, and a sack of Rome. The popes who built St. Peter¿s coaxed and commanded the greatest work from the giants of the Renaissance and Baroque: Michelangelo, Bramante, and his protégé Raphael; the architect Giacomo della Porta; and the prodigy Bernini. Francesco Borromini was one of the most notable architects of the 17th century, and though he fell into disfavor by the end of the following century, today he is classified as one of the most innovative architects in history. Although Borromini enjoyed a highly successful career, he was already subjected to intense criticism during his lifetime. Criticism continued well after Borromini's death, when the most often used word to assess his work was bizarre. Critics begrudged the fact that, in their view, Borromini ignored the traditional rules of architecture that had been established by the ancients and revived during the Renaissance era. They did not recognize that Borromini was indeed an avid student of both ancient and Renaissance architecture, and that he often borrowed elements from these two eras but then applied them to his structures in new and inventive ways. It was not until art historians began assessing Borromini's architecture in a sober and nonjudgmental manner in the late 19th century that he was finally given his proper place in the history of architecture. This book assesses Borromini's individual commissions following the proper scholarly methodology, as well as his biographical details, artistic development, relationship with his protectors and patrons, and external circumstances that might have determined his artistic output. This book emphasizes the innovations Borromini introduced to the field of architecture and how these influenced later artists.
