The Bookshop
A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Goodreads Choice Award Winner in History & Biography One of Time’s 100 Must-Read Books of 2024 "A spirited defense of this important, odd and odds-defying American retail category." —The New York Times "It is a delight to wander through the bookstores of American history in this warm, generous book." —Emma Straub, New York Times bestselling author and owner of Books Are Magic An affectionate and engaging history of the American bookstore and its central place in American cultural life, from department stores to indies, from highbrow dealers trading in first editions to sidewalk vendors, and from chains to special-interest community destinations Bookstores have always been unlike any other kind of store, shaping readers and writers, and influencing our tastes, thoughts, and politics. They nurture local communities while creating new ones of their own. Bookshops are powerful spaces, but they are also endangered ones. In The Bookshop, we see the stakes: what has been, and what might be lost. Evan Friss’s history of the bookshop draws on oral histories, archival collections, municipal records, diaries, letters, and interviews with leading booksellers to offer a fascinating look at this institution beloved by so many. The story begins with Benjamin Franklin’s first bookstore in Philadelphia and takes us to a range of booksellers including the Strand, Chicago’s Marshall Field & Company, the Gotham Book Mart, specialty stores like Oscar Wilde and Drum and Spear, sidewalk sellers of used books, Barnes & Noble, Amazon Books, and Parnassus. The Bookshop is also a history of the leading figures in American bookselling, often impassioned eccentrics, and a history of how books have been marketed and sold over the course of more than two centuries—including, for example, a 3,000-pound elephant who signed books at Marshall Field’s in 1944. The Bookshop is a love letter to bookstores, a charming chronicle for anyone who cherishes these sanctuaries of literature, and essential reading to understand how these vital institutions have shaped American life—and why we still need them.

One of the most intrinsic significances of the daily Christian life is spiritual warfare as it relates to the coming manifestation of the Kingdom age. The manifestation of the Kingdom age will not come in and of itself. In other words, the coming manifestation of the Kingdom will not come automatically on its own. The Fundamental Truth of God’s Eternal Purpose and Planned Economy According to God’s planned economy, there is the necessity of spiritual warfare to bring in God’s Kingdom of righteousness. Regarding God’s eternal economy, we need to set forth the fundamental truths beginning from Genesis. You may ask what is God’s planned economy? Well, let’s go back to the beginning when God stretched for the heavens and laid the foundations of the earth and formed the human spirit of man within him (Zechariah 12:1). Moreover, Genesis 1:26 indicates that God had a plan in creating the universe with the spirit of man within him. According to Genesis 1:26 God said, Let us make man in our image and after our likeness and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of heaven and over the cattle and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth. God’s divine intention in creating tripartite man was to carry out His divine economy that God in Christ through the Spirit to dispense Himself as life into man so that God may have His habitation, dwelling place, reproduction, and expression within man. Thus, God created man as three parts: the body, soul, and human spirit. When God created man’s body, He then breathed into man’s nostrils the Breath of Life— that Breath formed man’s human spirit. Man’s human spirit has three parts: the conscience, fellowship, and intuition. Moreover, when man’s human spirit came in contact with his body, that contact became man’s living soul. The living soul is composed also of three parts: the mind, emotion, and will. Thus, man’s body could contact things outside and the soul is man’s psychological part with his mind, emotion, and will. Finally, the human spirit contacts God directly. Also, man’s human spirit is a container, vessel, or receptacle to contact God and worship Him directly. Why? Because God is Spirit and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and truthfulness (John 4:24).
