Impact of Mining Industry on The Tribals

Anthropologists and sociologists have conducted many studies to ascertain industrialization's impact on tribal communities and their areas. The present book consists of the research work conducted by the author in the past. This study remains relevant for researchers and policymakers interested in understanding the impact of industrialization, especially in the mining sector. The author discusses the establishment of the Malanjkhand Copper Ore Open Mine Project in Baiher tehsil of Balaghat district, Madhya Pradesh. The project led to significant disruption in the area due to the evacuation of villages for its establishment. The main objective of the study has been to study the Impact of the Malanjkhand Copper Ore Mining Industry on the tribes of Baihar Tahsil, Balaghat district, Madhya Pradesh to ascertain the immediate and long-term impact of this incoming mining industry on the external and internal realities of tribal society and culture. What kind of changes it would bring to the traditional tribal societies, and whether these impacts would be positive or negative for the people? It has been found that the land and areas where these tribes used to live started to be identified as rich in mineral and fuel resources. These resources were the primary requirement for the newly industrializing nation. The major industries chose to develop near mineral-rich areas so that they could have access to these primary resources. This area also witnessed simultaneous growth of township and urban centers around the industry necessary for the living of the workforce near the manufacturing site.
