The earliest prehistoric excavations on the island took place in 1887, when W.R. Paton discovered Mycenaean chamber tombs in the side of the torrent bed, which runs into the harbour of Pothia to the east of the hill of Perakastro, where the Late Bronze Age settlement stood. Most of the vessels found from Paton were presented to the British Museum while others are preserved in other European Museums. The first systematic excavations, however, took place only in the early twenties of the past century when the Italian archaeologist A. Maiuri director of the archaeological exploration of the then Italian islands of the Dodecanese, excavated the three prehistoric caves of Ayia Varvara (1920), Choiromandres (1921), and Vathy-Dhaskalio (1922), which are the object of the present study.

Nel nr. 29/2023 del Bollettino dell’Associazione Iasos di Caria, Alessandra Parrini (Di nuovo sui feeders di Iasos), alla luce delle testimonianze letterarie e artistiche sull’allattamento in età classica, ritorna sui due esemplari di feeders attici ritrovati nel contesto urbano. Marius C. Streinu (Gladiators in Caria. A brief owerviev) raccoglie la documentazione di Afrodisia, Halicarnassos, Iasos, Mylasa e Stratonikeia su secutores, retiarii, provocatores, murmillones, thraeces, essedarii, venatores (44 tra iscrizioni e rilievi). Per Giulia Marsili (L’officina lapidaria nel Balik Pazari di Iasos: osservazioni archeologiche ed epigrafiche) i segni cruciformi e le sigle su alcuni dei blocchi di marmor iassense venato riflettono l’orizzonte culturale e religioso di chi li lavorava e passaggi nel processo manifatturiero. Della interpretazione “cristiana” del “supplizio di Prometeo” raffigurato a sbalzo su una piccola coppa in lamina in lega di rame tratta Maria Teresa Lachin (La fabula di Prometeo a Tyana di Cappadocia). Dell’intensa attività svolta a Smirne tra il 1851 e il 1854 da Luigi Storari e dell’edizione, nel 1857, della sua “Guida con cenni storici di Smirne” scrive Cenk Berkant (Un ingegnere ed esule ferrarese a Smirne: Luigi Storari: 1821-1894). Tiziano Dorandi recensisce il volume di Marco Pelucchi edito nel 2022 Cherilo di Iasos. Testimonianze, frammenti, fortuna. A un anno dalla loro scomparsa, Giampaolo Graziadio e Luigi Donati ricordano Mario Benzi e Maurizio Michelucci.
