Ali Baba's Book Series on: Artistic Flags - Book Three: A Pictorial Tribute to 100 Countries For Their Participation in the Olympic Games

As a painter, I naturally enjoy working with colors. As an artist, I am influenced by social issues that could affect people across different countries and continents. And as an explorer and traveler, my biggest joy is to experience different countries with unique cultural backgrounds across the planet Earth. Thus, I came up with the idea of painting flags of countries as a tool to express my sincere love and gratitude to the mankind. In other words, painting flags is my way of saying thank you to all nations. This is book three of Ali Baba's book series on artistic flags. Each book in this series conveys a unique message of friendship. The message of this book is to honor all countries that have participated in the Olympic Games throughout the history. I whole- heartedly believe that every participating country has overcome impossible obstacles to carry the burden of bringing people together and consequently contributes to our understanding of each other. Thus, every country, regardless of the medal count deserves to be acknowledged and honored for their good intention and their great effort. Please notice that due to sheer number of countries I had to limit the list to 100 countries. Also, I have painted the flags according to my artistic impression of them, as such the dimensions and the specifications are not followed. The emblems have either been removed or replaced by symbolic figures. My hope is that to depict the flags of all countries at least once in this book series.
Arrested Welcome

Publisher: U of Minnesota Press
Release Date: 2020-06-09
Interpreting the meaning of hospitality in an unwelcoming political moment Amid xenophobic challenges to America’s core value of welcoming the tired and the poor, Irina Aristarkhova calls for new forms of hospitality in her engagement with the works of eight international artists. In this first monograph on hospitality in contemporary art, Aristarkhova employs a feminist perspective to critically explore the artworks of Ana Prvački, Faith Wilding, Lee Mingwei, Kathy High, Mithu Sen, Pippa Bacca, Silvia Moro, and Ken Aptekar and asks who, how, and what determines who is worthy of our welcome. Spanning a diverse range of contemporary art practices, Arrested Welcome shows how artists challenge our existing notions of hospitality—culturally, philosophically, and politically. From the role of “microcourtesies” in social change to the portrayal of waiting as a feminist endeavor, Aristarkhova looks deeply into topics such as gender stereotypes of welcome, ways to reclaim civility, and the means by which guests (sometimes human, sometimes animal) push the limits of our hosting traditions. Blending a feminist analysis of hospitality with in-depth case studies on how contemporary artists stimulate personal reflection and political engagement, Aristarkhova initiates these important conversations at a critical time of national and international hospitality crises.
