The field of orchestration has long been dominated by textbooks and how-to manuals designed to support composers and arrangers, mostly of Western Classical Music. The Oxford Handbook of Orchestration Studies takes a new approach and argues for the centrality of orchestration - the practice of choosing and combining instruments and other sound sources to create combinations of tone-colors (timbres) -- as a field of musical inquiry and study, one that is fundamentally global and interdisciplinary. This volume brings together scholars on orchestration from a wide range of musical and scholarly perspectives. "Orchestration studies" can be considered an emerging scholarly field that (like film studies or sound studies) examines its topic through the intersection of different interdisciplinary approaches and across an array of musical ensembles, from the symphony orchestra to jazz big bands to choirs, laptop orchestras, chamber ensembles and beyond.
