A Lithic Technological Analysis of the Nunnery Collection Bifaces from the Toby-Thornhill Site in Lauderdale County, Mississippi
Abstract: This thesis presents the results of a technological analysis of bifaces in the Nunnery collection recovered from the Toby-Thornhill site in Lauderdale County, Mississippi in 1984. The majority of the Nunnery collection consists of just over 3000 bifaces, including 1048 diagnostic hafted bifaces, 1628 unhafted bifaces, and 871 indeterminate bifaces and biface fragments. A classification of hafted bifaces shows the occupation of the site to span the late Paleoindian transition to the Middle Woodland period, with the greatest intensity of occupation occurring during the Late Archaic period. This analysis demonstrates the exchange of lithic raw material to various geographic regions in the southeast, as well as how the availability of raw material affects the organization of technology at the Toby-Thornhill site. A biface production trajectory model of the unhafted bifaces is theorized and detailed metric and statistical analysis of the data reveals a variety of trends in the production of both hafted and unhafted bifaces. These data are also used to accept or reject several formal hypotheses based on the literature of lithic technology. The variety of conclusions drawn from the data illustrates the potential of using improvenienced archaeological collections, which are often neglected as research resources, to help in understanding prehistoric American Indians of the Southeastern United States.
