Chaque tête fonctionnelle est déterminée par un trait (ou un ensemble de traits) qui est morphologiquement réalisé dans les langues Gbe par un marqueur. L'étude de ces marqueurs a permis de proposer une analyse détaillée des systèmes D, I et C. Chacun de ces systèmes comprend des classes de traits qui sont la propriété de têtes fonctionnelles distinctes, lesquelles peuvent ou non être morphologiquement réalisées à travers les langues.
