A Bibliography of Philippine Language Dictionaries and Vocabularies

This bibliography is a comprehensive listing of dictionaries and vocabularies, published and unpublished, of the Philippine languages. Introductory sections chronicle briefly the histories of Philippine lexicography and Philippine bibliographies, describe the scope of the present work, and outline the organization of the bibliography itself and the index. Titles in the bibliography are organized alphabetically by author, date, and title. It is noted that the chronological arrangement of an author's works illustrates that Philippine linguistics has moved from bilingual vocabulary lists to the beginnings of a monolingual Tagalog dictionary, indicating a growing maturity of scholarship and progress in standardization of the language. Following the bibliography is an index of the works arranged alphabetically by language, with cross-referencing according to alternative spellings of the language name. (MSE)

Is the bilingual dictionary really the translator’s best friend? Or is it the case that all translators hate all dictionaries? The truth probably lies half-way. It is difficult to verify anyway, as the literature on the subject(s) is limited, not helped by the fact that Lexicography and Translation have stood apart for decades despite their commonality of purpose. Here is a volume, based on the proceedings of a successful conference at Hong Kong, that may at last provide some answers.
