Years ago he had been shy, tongue-tied. In school no one ever heard him talk. No one ever got to know him. Except Tina - and only through notes they exchanged.
Now they are older but David still cannot speak and still they communicate only through written notes left in a hole of the tree near her bus stop. It seems a silly game for grownups to play but Tina will stop at nothing to help him break the bonds of his terrible isolation. Painfully, she comes to realize that not only David's future but hers, as well, depend on the success of her efforts. That only when he is able to voice friendship ripen into something more. And Tina desperately wants that something more.
