"What's it like in the Winter?" I'm asked that question by visitors dozens of times each summer. Well this book is the answer.
I had meant it to be about the whole of Scilly, but as time went on I realised, in Winter, just how much my world closes down to St. Martin's alone.
The boats are pulled up, so it's very hard to get to other off islands. Every Thursday we have a shopping boat to St. Marys, but I get no further than shops, coffee with friends and lunch in the pub.
There are very few strangers here either, social life and work are confined to a small group of islanders, except for the odd visitor at half term of Christmas.
So, the book is about a small community getting on with everyday life. The weather, the tides and the boats seem to rule our lives until the arrival of the first visitors at Easter, when the Island puts on its public face again.
