The Oxford Dictionary of Pronunciation for Current English
Author: Clive Upton
language: en
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
Release Date: 2001
Clive and two colleagues have developed completely new models and transcriptions for pronouncing and distinguishing between British and American English, rather than incremental changes in earlier approaches. They claim to represent the way people actually speak, rather than how arbiters of taste or style believe they should. They do, however, retain that universally recognized International Phonetic Alphabet. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
A Dictionary of American English Pronunciation
Author: Harold V. Cordry
language: en
Publisher: Austin & Winfield Publishers
Release Date: 1998
The principal object of A Dictionary of American-English Pronunciation is to provide in a single volume of manageable weight and by means of a simplified phonetic system the pronunciations of words and names most often mispronounced in American English. It is prescriptive, at least implicitly so, in that it reports not simply how words are pronounced but how they are pronounced by knowledgeable, educated, and cultivated speakers, a qualification which may be translated, if one chooses, into how they ought to be pronounced. Thus, one finds deh-MOYN (Des Moines) but not deh-MOYNZ, despite the latter version's evident popularity - as well as words drawn from the contemporary American scene in Hispanic, Latino, Black and Asian settings.
