During the late sixteenth century 'fashion' first took on the sense of restless change in contrast to the older sense of fashioning or making. As fashionings, clothes were perceived as material forms of personal and social identity which made the man or woman. In Renaissance Clothing and the Materials of Memory Jones and Stallybrass argue that the making and transmission of fabrics and clothing were central to the making of Renaissance culture. Their examination explores the role of clothes as forms of memory transmitted from master to servant, from friend to friend, from lover to lover. This 2001 book offers a close reading of literary texts, paintings, textiles, theatrical documents, and ephemera to reveal how clothing and textiles were crucial to the making and unmaking of concepts of status, gender, sexuality, and religion in the Renaissance. The book is illustrated with a wide range of images from portraits to embroidery.
Mechanics of Materials and Structures
A wide range of topics in the area of mechanics of materials and structures are covered in this volume, ranging from analysis to design. There is no special emphasis on a specific area of research. The first section of the book deals with topics on the mechanics and damage of concrete. It also includes two papers on granular packing structure changes and cumulative damage in polymers. In the second part more theoretical topics in mechanics are discussed, such as shell theory and nonlinear elasticity. The following section dicusses areas dealing primarily with plasticity, viscoelasticity, and viscoplasticity. These include such topics as dynamic and cyclic plasticity. In the final section the subject is structural dynamics, including seismic analysis, composite frames and nonlinear analysis of bridges. The volume is compiled in honor of Professor Maciej P. Bieniek who has served as a teacher and researcher at several universities, and who has made many significant contributions in the evaluation, rehabilitation, and design of infrastructures.
Memory Performance and Competencies
Research on memory development has accumulated over the past few years. Given the number of relevant publications in the field, it becomes increasingly difficult to keep track of major advances in specific areas of memory development. This book illustrates 2 purposes: * to permit experts in the various subdomains of research in memory development to summarize recent findings concerning the respective roles of capacity, strategies, and knowledge in the acquisition of memory skills; and * to discuss cross-cutting topics such as the influence of individual differences, practical and educational implications, and the potential of longitudinal studies.
