Johann Gustav Gildemeister (1812–1890) was a well-known Orientalist of the 19th century, who became famous throughout Germany for his book on the pilgrimage to the "Heilige Rock" relic at Trier. The Bonn University Archive holds his bequest of letters that are going to be edited within the scope of a DFG funded project. The present volume is the result of a conference on the occasion of 200st birthday that took place in summer 2012. The contributions highlight the historic background of the most important periods in Gildemeister's life in Bremen, Marburg and Bonn. Furthermore they provide valuable information on different aspects of bourgeois life in the 19th century. Finally they present an overview over the development of Oriental Studies in that period of time. They therefore supply an important contribution the understanding of the letters and the historic frame in which they originated.
Manuscripts, Politics and Oriental Studies

Manuscripts, Politics and Oriental Studies commemorates the life and works of Johann Gottfried Wetzstein (1815-1905) as a scholar, manuscript collector, and consul in Berlin and Damascus. Beyond research into Wetzstein's own time, special attention is given to the impact his efforts to acquire manuscripts have had until this day. Several contributions also illustrate contemporary developments that give context to his own career as a scholar and diplomat. The particular focus of this volume allows to explore the history of Oriental scholarship not purely through the lens of academic posts and publications but encourages us to discover lifes such as Wetzstein's, without academic stardom yet laying the material foundations of textual work for generations. Doch plötzlich jetzt emanzipiert will Wissenschaft sie treiben

Under the headline "yet suddenly emancipated science wishes to drive them", taken from the song of the sorority Hilaritas from Bonn founded in 1899, the authors analyse the history of women at the University of Bonn. When the University was founded in 1818 women participated in social life but only gained access to science and research after women were allowed to study, yet - not without protest. Embedded in the different eras of German history the present volume analyses this changing development of the past 200 years with the help of biographic and thematical contributions.
