The enormous leaps of growth and development experienced by Eastern and Southeast Asian states since the 1960s on account of their astonishing industrial development have led to concerns that a resulting global economic and political shift might favour the Pacific region at the expense of the "Atlantic region". A "Pacific century" was proclaimed, in which it was predicted that Asian-Pacific countries would outpace the traditional leading powers of the West. A more careful look quickly reveals that this view is too simplistic. From the point of view of various disciplines and covering different nations like China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines and Papua New Guinea the authors of this publication pursue the question whether the 21st century can already be labelled the "Pacific Century". This was also the title of the interdisciplinary series of lectures held at the University of Göttingen/Germany in the winter semester 2003/2004. This series of lectures was jointly organized by the Department of Geography, the University of Göttingen and the Association of Pacific Studies e.V. (APSA). This 10th volume of the publication series "Pazifik Forum" contains contributions by W. Kreisel, M. Taube & Ka-Wai Yiu, M. Waibel, A. Croissant, B. Dahm, H. Schneider, R. Seib and R. Jordan. Zunehmender Wettbewerb auf den angestammten, nationalen Märkten, der Zwang zur Auslastung bestehender Produktions kapazitäten und die Entstehung neuer Märkte in fremden Ländern stellen nur einige der relevanten Gründe dar, die viele Unternehmen zur Ausweitung ihres traditionellen Marktgebietes veranlassen. Im Zuge der marketing-strategischen Bearbeitung mehrerer Länder einer Wirtschafts region ergibt sich für multinationale Unternehmen das Problem der Einbindung der im Raum verstreuten, verbundenen Unternehmen in die gesamte Unternehmens organisation. Ein administratives Hilfsmittel hierzu stellt das Regionalbüro dar, dessen vornehmliche Aufgabe in der Integration dieser Unternehmensteile ein schließlich der Koordination und Kontrolle der entstehenden Ströme von Menschen sowie tangiblen und intangiblen Gütern zwischen den Unternehmensteilen besteht. Wie bei jeder wirtschaftlichen Tätigkeit des Menschen, stellt sich auch hier die Frage nach dem geeigneten Standort für diese administrative Unternehmenseinheit. Abgesehen von wenigen Fallbeispielen, die zum Teil zu unterschiedlichen Schlu߭ folgerungen hinsichtlich der Identifizierung eines geeigneten Standortes gelangen, gibt die existierende Fachliteratur in diesem Zusammenhang wenig Aufschluß. Eine der wachstumsstärksten und damit für multinationale Unternehmen derzeit interessantesten Wirtschaftsregionen der Welt stellt Südostasien dar. Wo sollte sich hier ein Regionalbüro ansiedeln? Warum sollte es sich in Singapur, auf einer nur 639 Quadratkilometer großen Insel, niederlassen? Die Beantwortung dieser Fragen im Rahmen einer wissenschaftlichen Arbeit er möglichte mir Herr Professor Dr. Wigand Ritter, Ordinarius des Lehrstuhls für Wirtschafts- und Sozialgeographie an der UniversitätErlangen-Nürnberg. An die ser Stelle möchte ich ihm herzlich für seine hilfreichen Anregungen und zahl reichen Ratschläge danken.
