In the spring of 2009, an ordinary working couple in their late 40s, from Gosport in Hampshire, were walking their local long distance path, the Solent Way, a bit at a time at weekends. When they completed it, they didn’t want to stop. They pushed on from the Hampshire border into Sussex and then kept walking. They walked through life changes, bereavement, recessions and referendums, and reflected on the changing state of the nation and themselves. Eight years and eight months, 212 stages and 2,538 miles later they had walked right round England anti-clockwise, following coast and border back to their own front door.
The resulting book is written from the log they kept. Part ‘how to’ guide, part nature diary and part social commentary on the state of the nation during a period of great turmoil, the book - with a wealth of stunning photos - is witty, descriptive, and fascinating, giving readers a detailed insight into life and land at the edge of England.
