In her work, visual artist Popel Coumou plays with the main elements of photography: light, paper, and the perception of reality. By carefully lighting her collages, she manages to give the paper relief a third dimension; the flat surface comes to life. She creates empty spaces, compositions and graphic lines verging on the abstract. Figures rarely appear in her work, but there is always a sign of recent human presence, such as an empty chair or an open door. Published on the occasion of an exhibition at Fotomuseum Den Haag, Paper and Light is an overview of Coumou’s work to date, including new work in an enlarged collage technique, specially produced for the museum.
