With this volume, a sequel to the earlier Science Study Series title Electrons And Waves, Dr. John R. Pierce continues the revision and updating of his popular introduction to electronics. He begins with a survey of the physical laws governing quantum phenomena, and the principles of amplification and transmission. The major portion of the book examines the new devices that lately have been added to modern technology as a result of research in quantum and solid state physics. The author explains how advances in quantum mechanics, spectroscopy, and microwave technology led to the brilliant conception, in 1951, of the maser, and the subsequent development of masers and lasers and their applications. And finally, he shows the reader how the transistor works, and how it has become as indispensable part of such modern inventions as portable radios and space satellites.
