This is the story of Dick Buscher, a 31-year employee of the US Forest Service who planned and drew the boundaries of the North Cascades National Park, and the Alpine Lakes and William O. Douglas Wildernesses in Washington State. During his career, Buscher served as a forester, planner, District Ranger, Deputy Forest Supervisor, and Deputy Director of Recreation for the Pacific Northwest Region of the Forest Service. In the process, he had memorable encounters with two US Senators, numerous Congressmen, Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas, and first lady Ladybird Johnson. His experiences left him with strong feelings about proper forest management and the need for Wilderness preservation.
