A cloud of strange whittish-gray flakes drifted dwn from the Pacific sky and fell on Aikichi Kuboyama and his twenty-two shipmates on March 1, 1954... On september 23 of that year, after spending most of the intervening time in the hospital, Kuboyama died. He was the first victim of the H-bomb age of nuclear weapons.
