The book was intended to improve mathematics teaching in the UK, but more specifically at the University of Cambridge and in schools teaching higher mathematics. Directed at "scholarship level" students – the top 10% to 20% by excellence. Hardy himself did not first find a passion for math, only regarding it as a way to beat other students, and gain scholarships. However, this book excels in adequately explaining analytical number theory and calculus following the rigor of mathematics.
