The rains have come in Nigeria and pro mise an expansion of alluvial mining. Labour is scarce, as is usual at the beginning of the rainy season. The rise in the river has allowed the Niger Company's largest stern-wheelers to ply on the Niger between Lokoja and For cados. A telegraph line is to be in operation to the Jemaa district by August.
