In 1718, the infamous pirate Blackbeard was killed off the coast of Ocracoke Island. When his body was searched, British sailors failed to find a powerful artifact believed to have been in his possession: the Sapphire Ring.
Centuries later, Blackbeard’s descendant, Mark Qingshan Michaels, is one of the brightest students at his high school, just behind his best friend Chuck. When their chemistry class is invited to a tech demonstration, a lab accident causes Mark to be struck with a shard of superheated metal. As the summer kicks off, Mark starts noticing changes: he always feels hot, his eyes are red, and he can summon fire from his hands!
With help from Chuck, Mark becomes the world’s first superhero: Solarflare. After Mark makes his heroic debut, Chuck confesses that the lab accident didn’t give Mark superpowers; it awakened them. Chuck reveals that he and his father are royalty from Atlantis living in exile and that Mark’s new abilities may be the key to ending a secret, millennia-old war between Atlantis and fire-wielding pirates.
In order to protect his friend, Mark must secure the Sapphire Ring before it falls into the wrong hands. In the process, Mark will juggle the stresses of high school with his new superhero career, face supercriminals from the deep, and question who exactly he can trust with so much on the line.
