This study is intended as an index to first and other significant appearances of key words and names in J. R. R. Tolkien's masterpiece of epic fantasy, THE LORD OF THE RINGS. It is not a definitive concordance to all names—such books already exist, and in any event such a massive undertaking does not fall within the purview of this study. Instead, it offers readers a thumbnail sketch of Tolkien's imaginative use of names and naming and suggests the extent of his indebtedness to Germanic language and literature.
