This is the second novel in the Trident series.
Jon Brown has graduated from the University of Illinois School of Music, a fledgling musician. Using some of his inheritance from his grandfather, he purchased a stately home near a lake. His attention is on the love of his life, Alison d'Ambrose. He'd met her while visiting strange worlds in which magic still operates. His travels began when he learned how to use the strange leather bound book of paintings his grandfather left him. Jon discovers that the book is really a magical book of portals - a gateway to other worlds.
After learning how to step into these worlds, he quickly became involved in a dual mystery involving the development of his own mental powers and a major war. Jon is aided by and dependent upon two new friends: Mandy Blackthorn, a beautiful ranger of the forests, and Alison d'Ambrose, a powerful magic user. And he fell in love with her.
Sitting on the grounds of his new estate, Jon senses something is very wrong with Alison and heads to her world. He finds her nearly dead, torn apart by strange demon bugs from the Abyss. With the help of Mandy and Darless and Lady Ursla, Alison is restored to physical health. But her mind remains tormented by the attack on her.
They set off on a major adventure to find out who sent these demon bugs and why. Along the way they find Alison's long lost brother and sister. As Jon's mental powers increase, he is given the title of Saint Jon Brown, the Redeemer, by Father Ukko himself.
Celtic and Finnish mythology provides the back ground for the novel which is both a mystery and a love story.
