From a "Note by the General Editor":
"This series of Readers is designed to provide an introduction to Russian literature both for fairly elementary and for more advanced students of Russian. In choosing the texts, the Editors have tried to make the selections representative, while avoiding as far as possible works which offer special difficulties.
"Simple grammatical rules, accessible in any Russian grammar, are not given, but an attempt is made to clarify some of the obscurities of Russian syntax by supplying translations of difficult phrases and examples of comparable idiomatic constructions. Some helpful grammatical information is embodied in the Vocabularies, and the student is urged to read carefully the 'Introduction to Vocabulary'.
"[...] Accentuation, which presents difficulties not only for beginners but also for advanced students of Russian, in indicated in all texts."
