The memoir of Captain George Fred Tilton follows his career as a sailor through the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, from running away to sea as a boy to eventually rising to a captain of ships. Tilton served on merchantmen and whalers and, eventually, in the First World War. The Cap'n ended his long career overseeing the restoration of the whaling ship 'Charles W. Morgan,' which still serves as a museum in New Bedford.
